With Guy Ritchie developing a live-action reboot of Aladdin for Disney, now comes word on who may well be being lined up to play the Genie in this new take on an old favourite.

As per Variety, Will Smith is in talks to voice the character famously vocalized by Robin Williams in the 1992 animated feature. If Smith does indeed sign on for the gig, this will mark his first voiceover work since Shark Tale back in 2004.

At one point, Smith was actually being looked at to star in another live-action Disney redo, Dumbo, but scheduling conflicts saw that fall apart. Seemingly both parties were keen to work together in some fashion, though, and now it could well be that Smith takes on the role of Aladdin’s famed Genie.

Where the rest of the film’s key players are concerned, it’s believed that Disney plan to cast relative newcomers in the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine.

Expect more on this as it develops.
