Wednesday Addams is back in all her black-clad glory in Netflix’s first trailer for the Tim Burton-directed Addams Family series.

Jenna Ortega cuts an immediately recognisable silhouette in the two-minute teaser, as multiple school expulsions and a piranha attack on the (former) water polo team her parents to enrol her at Nevermore Academy – a perfectly creepy boarding school.

Described by Wednesday’s father Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and mother Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) as a “magical place” where they themselves met, Nevermore offers Wednesday the promise of a community, and maybe even friends. But from what we see in the trailer for this sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery, the adjustment looks anything but smooth – cue the Carrie homage and buckets of blood.

Co-showrunner Miles Millar previously asserted that the series was neither a reboot nor a remake of beloved The Addams Family, and rather would best be described as “an eight-hour Tim Burton movie.” Burton serves as both director and executive producer on the eight-episode series.

Rounding out the cast is Gwendoline Christie as Nevermore’s headmistress, alongside Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Naomi J. Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, and Riki Lindhome, with Christina Ricci in a top-secret role.

Wednesday releases to Netflix this autumn.
