Last week we had a look ahead to the upcoming return of eerie anthology web-series Twisted Showcase. Having gained critical and fan acclaim, including being featured on The Guardian’s Top 25 list of web shows that you need to see back in 2012, creators Robin Bell and Rhys Jones are making quite the name for themselves. This week sees the release of the first episode of the shiny, new third series. Titled Payback, the episode stars Torchwood’s Gareth David-Lloyd and takes a slanted look at the payday loan culture that seems to have engulfed the country over the last few years. As well as the episode in its entirety, we were lucky enough to grab some time with Payback’s star, who had also worked with the series previously on the popular Peter and Paul episode.

So, without further ado, feast your eyes on Twisted Showcase’s return episode, Payback:

And now for that chatter with star, Gareth David-Lloyd.

Starburst: This isn’t the first time you’ve worked with Twisted Showcase. How did you first get involved with the show?

Gareth David-Lloyd: I was approached by Robin Bell after a recommendation from James Moran. I’d worked with James on Torchwood and Girl No. 9 and he knows I have a love for horror!

Peter and Paul was one of the most popular episode of the show so far. Did you expect that episode to do as well as it did?

I enjoyed the script – that’s why I chose to do it – so I wasn’t surprised it did well.

And now you’re back for more, starring in the first episode of Series 3. What drew you back to do more Twisted Showcase work?

The timbre and mood Twisted Showcase projects intoxicates and bewitches me. And again, the big deal maker for me was the originality of the script I was sent.

This latest effort centres on the notion of payday loans. What can you tell us about your character, and do you harbour any similar ideas to the payday loan logic in real life?

You hear so many horror stories about illegal money lenders. I’ve often been in the position where I’ve considered them as an option myself. For genre purposes, Payback offers an extreme, magnified and distorted take on the subject but at its heart there’s a very real warning which hopefully some people will heed.

Given the unique approach and output from the guys at Twisted Showcase, were you a fan of similar darkly-humourous, eerie anthology series growing up or is this all relatively new to you?

No, always been a horror and black comedy fan!

With such a large Doctor Who and Torchwood contingent amongst our readers, it’d be remiss not to mention those shows. How cool was it to be a part of that world?

A corner stone in my life and career. My character has a fucking Shrine! Ianto will always be close to my heart.

Given that the Ianto character started off in a small role but the fans grasped onto him massively, how is it as an actor to see fans across the globe mourning his demise or looking for him to somehow be brought back?

Good luck to them. I sincerely hope they succeed.

As a young pup, what inspired you to want to do the whole acting thing in the first place?

My brother used to feed me mugs of cider and make me watch Hammer horrors. All started from there really.

With Twisted Showcase having proved so successful so far, do you envisage yourself returning again down the line?

Absolutely. No matter where I am or what I’m doing, if they call me and the script is as good as they have been I will always try my best to make myself available.

And if you could come up with the idea for a Twisted Showcase episode yourself, what dark, unhinged concepts would you go with?

Vengeful druid ghosts and cursed Roman bloodlines.

Elsewhere, what else do you have on your plate that we can look forward to seeing?

I’m currently shooting a horror movie, Dark Signal, which should be out next year.
