In some rather cool news, a redo of 1980s cartoon Voltron is just one of a host of shows heading to Netflix over the next few years.

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation have announced that they’ve extended their current multi-year deal, meaning that the on-demand service will be the home for a whole bunch of new animated shows as well as landing Netflix the rights to all DreamWorks Animation’s movies.

Whilst series such as The Adventures of Puss in Boots, Dinotrux and Dragons: Race to the Edge will be part of the deal, what’s most interesting is that this year will see Netflix launch new shows such as Trollhunters and a new take on Voltron. Trollhunters happens to be from the mind of Guillermo del Toro (meaning we’re already super excited for this one) and focuses on two friends who discover all is not quite what it seems underneath their small hometown, whereas Voltron needs no introduction for those of a certain vintage. However, for those not of a certain vintage, Voltron was a cartoon that originally aired in 1984 and 1985, featuring a group of astronauts who piloted five lion-based vehicles that came together to make the super-robot Voltron. Following its initial run, Voltron was relaunched in the ‘90s and again a few years ago. In addition to Trollhunters and Voltron, Netflix and DreamWorks Animation will be working on several other new original series as well as new takes on some other old favourites.

On this news, Netflix’s Cindy Holland said, “DreamWorks Animation is synonymous with great storytelling that families around the world enjoy. It’s with great pleasure that we expand on an already successful relationship with DreamWorks Animation to bring more premium kids and family television to Netflix members globally.”

DreamWorks Animation’s Ann Daly chimed in, “This agreement adds to the incredible foundation we’ve built together with Netflix over a number of years across both film and television. We are proud to work closely with Netflix to continue delivering high-quality programming to audiences around the world.”

As mentioned, expect Voltron and del Toro’s Trollhunters to arrive on Netflix later this year.
