Remember James Cameron’s Avatar sequels? You know, the three films that the director is currently working on? Well Cameron has now given an update on where things currently stand.

Speaking to EW, Cameron revealed, “I’m in the process of doing another pass through all three scripts right now. Just refining. That’s in parallel with the design process. The design process is very mature at this point. We’ve been designing for about a year and a half. All the characters, setting and creatures are all pretty much set.”

He added, “You have to challenge yourself. Obviously, expectations are going to be very high on these films, especially on Avatar 2, to make sure it wasn’t just some big fluke the first time. So we’ve got to deliver. I’ve created a nice rod for my own back, so they say.”

The last word on Avatar 2 was that it was set for a 2017 release, with two films to follow that over the next few years. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver are all returning in some capacity.

Cameron’s 2009 Avatar is still the highest grossing movie of all-time, having taken home a whopping $2.7 billion across the globe.
