Approaching its 25th anniversary, the original TREMORS introduced to the world a new source of fear… not Kevin Bacon, but a congregation of subterranean monsters that munched their way through a small American town. Filmmaker Don Michael Paul is readying himself to helm a remake for Universal Pictures and recently committed this to his blog:

“After I finish up COMPANY OF HEROES: THE FOURTH REICH I will be headed to Johannesburg, South Africa to reboot the TREMORS franchise for Universal. I have a big year ahead of me and I’m excited to keep it going with the support of all you genre movie lovers out there.”

The location he mentions is promising news as Johannesburg has served as the setting for a number of great sci-fi films, this of course includes DISTRICT 9. The powers of CGI nowadays are an exciting prospect for any filmmaker and this creates an opportunity to make some really ground-breaking (wink wink, nudge nudge) creature designs.

So, if the director of JARHEAD 2: FIELD OF FIRE and LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER chooses to cross paths with the legacy that is TREMORS, this remake should hit our screens in the not too distant future.
