FremantleMedia have announced that they’re rebooting UNIVERSAL SOLDIER as a “major new global television property” (their words) – which we’re guessing means Van Damme and Lundgren won’t be asked back.

This marks the sixth incarnation of the franchise since its debut in the 1992, though Roland Emmerich’s original is the only one of the series to be released theatrical.

Will FreemantleMedia succeed in bringing this to a mass TV audience, or will it go the way of the last four straight-to-DVD efforts and be seen by nobody? It will undeniably depend on how they approach it (of which there are no details as per time of writing) but it’s hard to argue that a clean reboot is, for once, the right way to go.

We’ll keep you in the loop on this one…
