TWILIGHT may remain as divisive a franchise as upon its first cinematic release, but the opportunity to give five aspiring female filmmakers a chance in the limelight is something most of us can get behind (never mind those bottom-dwelling internet trolls).

Lionsgate Studios and TWILIGHT author Stephanie Meyer have announced plans to select five directors to helm short films based on characters from the TWILIGHT universe. The project, entitled THE STORYTELLERS – NEW CREATIVE VOICES OF THE TWILIGHT SAGA, with be shown exclusively through Facebook next year.

An all-female panel including Meyer, Kristen Stewart and Kate Winslet, will choose award winning films and mentor the participants. Meyer has stated, ‘The female voice is something that has become more and more important to me as I’ve worked in the film industry.

Lionsgate chairman Michael Burns added, ‘We think Facebook is a great way for us to introduce the world of TWILIGHT to a whole new audience while re-energising existing fans.

Neither Kristen Stewart nor Robert Pattinson are expected to appear in any of the shorts.

Being able to give more content directly to fans is a great idea. With all fingers crossed, this could be the start of something special, with FIREFLY, FARSCAPE, and many more to follow.
