There’s been long-standing discussions that Agent Phil Coulson’s death in THE AVENGERS was fabricated by Nick Fury to give Stark, Rogers, Romanoff, Banner and co. that extra drive needed for them to work out their differences and come together as a team. Quite why Phil’s passing would tug at their collective heartstrings as much as it did is open for debate, given the fact that, besides Stark and Widow, nobody had really spent that much time with the guy. And even Tony wasn’t on first name terms with the fella!

Anyway, looks like we’ll get our definitive answer soon, as Whedon has today revealed via a video announcement screened at NYCC that Clark Gregg will reprise the character on his forthcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series for Marvel Studios.

So will the show be set pre or post AVENGERS? Nobody is budging for now, but we look forward to finding out…
