Big news from the zombie apocalypse: AMC are developing a companion series to THE WALKING DEAD.

To be headed by series creator Robert Kirkman, alongside executive producers Gale Anne Hurd and Dave Alpert, this new series will explore a new corner of the same post-apocalyptic world. Whereas THE WALKING DEAD has adapted characters and stories from Kirkman’s acclaimed comic series of the same name, this new spin-off will follow brand new characters.

Kirkman said of his new venture:

“After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

Like a horde of walkers, THE WALKING DEAD is a brand that just can’t be stopped. Unlike a horde of walkers, that’s good news. If it can live up to the quality of its parent series, or its parent series’ parent comic book, or indeed the video games, this won’t disappoint. The bad news is that the spin-off is shuffling towards us at true zombie pace and we won’t get to see it until 2015… Nevertheless, Season 4 of THE WALKING DEAD will premiere on 13th October in the US, with a UK broadcast soon after on Friday 18th.
