Fox will be giving Walking Dead fans an early Halloween treat this year as it has confirmed that season four will shamble onto our screens on Friday 18th October. That’s just five days after its US broadcast debut.

The previous season climaxed with a cliff hanger in which the brutal Governor (portrayed by the always excellent David Morrissey) escaped.

Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes, has promised a “deeper, darker season”.

Lauren Cohan, who plays Maggie Greene, added: “There’s this wonderful slow burn to this season that really, really catches you off guard when something happens, because what we get this season that I don’t think we’ve had as much of is very specific deep character development.

“Where we go off on these little loops into these characters’ lives and then you’re just caught from the side with the horror.”
