CBS’ Steven King adaptation UNDER THE DOME will return for a second 13-episode run next summer, it has been announced.

Here’s what CBS President Nina Tassler had to say about the renewal:

“We’re excited to tell more stories about the mystery of the dome and the secrets in Chester’s Mill, and are thrilled to have the master storyteller himself, Stephen King, tell the first one of next season.”

UNDER THE DOME, which follows the town of Chester’s Mill after a mysterious dome turns up to isolate it from the rest of the world, has been a ratings success for the US broadcaster. However, the renewal may come as a surprise to viewers who were expecting the series to follow the novel and come to a neat conclusion as a one-off ‘event’ series. Showrunner Neal Baer and executive producer Brian K. Vaughan think there are more tales to be told about Chester’s Mill. They said:

“When we first started talking to Stephen, we came up with the idea of the town potentially being trapped for years at a time, and that’s something that you guys could get to do that I didn’t. We pitched Stephen a far-out, big-swing idea for this to go several years – a different ending – and he was really excited by it.”

This wouldn’t be the first unforeseen move, as the book’s fans have already been complaining about the changes CBS have made to the story. Responding to these criticisms, King himself posted on his website:

“Many of the changes wrought by Brian K. Vaughan and his team of writers have been of necessity, and I approved of them wholeheartedly. Some have been occasioned by their plan to keep the dome in place over Chester’s Mill for months instead of little more than a week, as is the case in the book. Other story modifications are slotting into place because the writers have completely reimagined the source of the dome.”
