Sherlock Holmes may be only borderline Starburst fodder (but let’s remember that Conan Doyle’s Great Detective’s published canon includes the supernaturally-slanted ‘The Hounds of the Baskervilles’ and ‘The Sussex Vampire’ and that the BBC Sherlock series stars Benedict (Star Trek Into Darkness) Cumberbatch and Martin (The Hobbit) Freeman, but we’ll take a chance and go for it anyway. The third series of Sherlock, created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, starts filming on March 18th for transmission later this year and star Cumberbatch (Holmes) has revealed that he and Freeman are already signed up for a fourth series of three ninety-minute TV episodes, presumably to screen next year subject to the commitments of both busy actors – and Moffat and Gatiss, of course who have a few other TV projects on the bubble at the moment.

Speaking at the South bank Awards show today Cumberbatch let slip that he and Freeman are on board for more adventures as the slick, modern-day Holmes and Watson partnership – signing the pair up for a fourth series was clearly an elementary decision (what???) for the BBC and Cumberbatch indicated that both stars would be happy to continue in their roles beyond the fourth series should their workload allow.
