The recent blockbuster mid-season finale of AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD left audiences in shock and highly anticipating the show’s return in the new year. Scott Gimple, the series’ showrunner, has been speaking to TV Guide to reveal that it’s not going to be an easy return for Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes.

Gimple said, “It’s going to hit Rick in a way that we haven’t seen before. If it’s just the two of them, Carl is going to have to step up quite a bit because circumstances are wildly different and a lot will depend on him in terms of them just surviving. They don’t have an awesome, dual-layer fence and brick buildings to hide behind. They’re out in the world.”

It has been previously claimed that Chandler Riggs’ Carl Grimes character would play a pivotal role in the remainder of the season, and this only further adds to those stories.

Season 4 of THE WALKING DEAD returns to US screens on 9th February, with the UK return expected to follow a few days after that date. In case you missed the mid-season finale, you can find a review of the episode here.
