THE SIMPSONS are marking the retirement of Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki in the next episode, to air on Sunday in the US.

Cultural references have always played a big part in the humour of THE SIMPSONS, be they popular and obvious or unfamiliar and obscure (Marge: “You enjoyed Rashomon.” Homer: “That’s not how I remember it.”)

The clip below pays homage to Studio Ghibli’s three-decade output with an abundance of visual shout-outs, cramming in almost as many allusions as Guillermo del Toro’s opening for TREEHOUSE OF TERROR XXIV. How many can you spot?
