What better Christmas present could SHERLOCK fans have other than a SHERLOCK Christmas special? All right, a fourth series would top that but, come on, a Christmas special would be… well …special.

So will it happen? Well Martin Freeman, who plays Sherlock’s long suffering companion John Watson, (and who turned in a tour-de-force performance in the recently concluded FARGO) seems to think it’s likely when he told The Telegraph that filming begins anew sometime next year.

“If that’s going to be a special – I’m speaking off-message here; if this was New Labour I’d get fired – I think that might be for next Christmas,” he said. “A Christmas special – that’s what I understand.”

Freeman also hinted that his real life partner, Amanda Abbington, will remain with the BBC’s colossal hit of a show as Watson’s wife Mary “for the foreseeable future”.

“While we play fast and loose with the original stories, we generally follow the trajectory of what Conan Doyle did,” he added. “So he gets married, and then Mary dies – so at some point presumably she’ll die.”
