There’s often a fine line between sci-fi and comedy, from the campy leanings of Star Trek TOS to the witty writings of Douglas Adams’ Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but rarely is sci-fi ever given room to breathe in sitcom format, rarer still is when it works.

Hyperdrive, starring Nick Frost, Miranda Heart and Kevin Eldon, had everything going for it, yet flopped harder than the probability drive-conjured whale in the aforementioned Hitchhikers Guide. For these reasons Red Dwarf is rightly celebrated, achieving cult status for its 10-jokes-a-minute formula and its cheap scuzzy charm. More than that, it was quintessentially British. Who else would have put up with it for all those years?

Red Dwarf stars Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn have revealed at Sci FI Scarborough that the 11th series of the show will air in autumn 2015 on Dave. The latest addition to the Red Dwarf canon follows the popular comeback 10th series in 2012.

Filming is, according to John-Jules, set to begin in October.
