Producer Greg Berlanti (ARROW) and novelist turned screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith (DARK SHADOWS) have teamed up to make PARADISE, a new futuristic prison drama for NBC. The show, which has received a pilot order, has the alarmingly familiar concept in which a US state is turned into a maximum-security prison. Now before you cry foul and cite John Carpenter’s 1981 classic ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (and its wretched sequel) as already having been there and done that, bear in mind… this is set in Las Vegas. So yeah… erm, big difference there. Cough.

The series will see Snake Pli– oops, sorry, Matthew Turner M.D., sent to Vegas (now nicknamed Paradise) for a crime he didn’t commit (of course he didn’t). Can he break out, clear his name and reunite with his family? If all goes well we’ll be able to follow his adventures sometime in 2014.

Ribbing aside, there’s plenty of opportunity for great stories to be told here, and it’s perfect for the serialized nature of TV. But NBC should probably brace itself for a call from Joel Silver very soon. If this thing arrives before his proposed ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK reboot, he’s gonna be pissed.
