Fantasy author extraordinaire and occasional DOCTOR WHO writer Neil Gaiman has stated that failing to cast a black actor as the new Doctor is a “missed opportunity”.

Writing on his blog, Gaiman said, “Would I like a person of colour as the Doctor? Absolutely. I was disappointed that it didn’t happen this time, and that there are some amazing actors out there. I was rather disappointed that Paterson Joseph didn’t get it last time, although I’ve loved Matt’s Eleven.”

Gaiman has no doubts that a black actor will eventually portray the Time Lord as well as a female star, although he thinks that it is “not yet” time for a woman to play the Doctor.

“If I were show-running (I’m not) I wouldn’t cast a woman as the Doctor yet, and it would absolutely be on my list of things to do in the following regeneration,” he explained.

“Some of that is stuff I’d find hard to articulate, mostly having to do with what kind of Doctor you follow Matt Smith’s Doctor with: someone harder and much older and more dangerous and, yes, male feels right to me, as a storyteller. Where you go after that, ah, that’s a whole new game…

“And yes, women can be old, and hard, and dangerous I’d rather see a female Doctor as a reaction to whatever Peter Capaldi is, than as a reaction to Matt’s creation.”

Although the 55 year old Peter Capaldi will be the newest custodian of the TARDIS, Gaiman was in no way “disappointed”, stating that he thinks Capaldi is “an amazing actor”.

“I can’t wait to see what he does,” he continued. “I’m glad that we’re getting an older Doctor – we’ve had two puppies, it’s time to see someone older. It’ll change the nature of the relationship with Clara (Jenna Coleman) in interesting ways, for a start.”

Peter Capaldi will debut as the 12th Doctor in Doctor Who’s 2013 Christmas episode.
