Due to the bombardment of rumoured projects that never come to pass, it’s often dangerous to get too excited about certain movies until that clapperboard slaps shut on the first day of shooting. Until then all bets are off. And it’s even worse with TV. Just because a show you couldn’t wait to see had shot its first episode, it didn’t guarantee you’d see beyond it, which BATTLESTAR GALACTICA and MUNSTERS fans will attest to given neither BLOOD & CHROME nor MOCKINGBIRD LANE made it far out of the gate. (Actually, MUNSTERS fans were probably glad the latter was put out of its misery so early. Bad example.)

So when we first heard rumblings of HBO being interested in adapting Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed book AMERICAN GODS for the small screen in June 2011, we here at Starburst decided not to pop those champagne corks just yet, and wait it out. And wait we did, until finally we caught a recent Tweet by @NeilHimself which read:

“Writing HBO AMERICAN GODS pilot with @Tordotcom AMERICAN GODS playlist keeping me company.”

Yep, seems it’s far closer to reality than we actually thought. Not a done deal yet, for sure, but can you imagine Gaiman presenting the cable channel with anything less than spectacular? Us neither. In fact, to hell with it, let’s crack open that bubbly!

(Balls, it’s all gone. It mustn’t have survived all those HBO / PREACHER rumours a few years back.)

For those unfamiliar, here’s the synopsis…

“Released from prison, Shadow finds his world turned upside down. His wife has been killed; a mysterious stranger offers him a job. But Mr. Wednesday, who knows more about Shadow than is possible, warns that a storm is coming — a battle for the very soul of America . . . and they are in its direct path.”

Back when we heard last, the original plan was to map out a six season narrative, with HBO ponying up $40m a year to get it onscreen. Little wonder then that the studio have been playing it cautiously. Hopefully we’ll know more soon, but we wouldn’t expect the show to even air until late 2013 at the very earliest. Stay tuned for updates!!! (Or just follow @NeilHimself, that’s probably easier.)
