Despite steadily-falling ratings (series three opened its account in October with over 1.4 million viewers whilst the best series four could manage was just over 750,000 for its debut) in the wake of the slow dispersal of its original cast members (Nathan Stewart-Jarret’s Curtis being the last ‘original’ character to be written out during last year’s series), E4 have recommissioned their lewd, crude Community Service ‘superhero’ series Misfits for a fifth series to air towards the end of the year. The show, created by Howard Overman (who is also responsible for the BBC’s new family fantasy Atlantis which begins filming in Morocco and South Wales next month), currently stars Joseph Gilgun (Emmerdale, Lockout), Karla Crome (currently appearing in BBC1’s Prisoners’ Wives and ITV’s struggling supernatural drama Lightfields), Nathan McMullen, Matt Stokoe and Natasha O’Keefe who joined the cast towards the end of series four. The series chronicles the antics of a group of youngsters carrying out Community Service on a remote estate in South London who have all been imbued with special abilities following a mysterious lightning storm in the very first episode back in 2009. Recent episodes have tended to ignore the ‘super-power’ aspects of the show so let’s hope the fifth series can tone down the toilet talk and smutty shenanigans and return to the inventiveness and intrigue of the first three series.
