It could be if some sort of heroic feat isn’t done soon to halt its alarmingly catastrophic drop in ratings, with this week’s episode registering an all time low.

Whilst Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has conquered multiplex box offices around the world in spectacular fashion, it seems to have fumbled with its first televisual offering. With almost 13 million tuning in when it aired 24th September, ABC’s ambitious drama Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was the biggest series premiere in four years. But since that auspicious beginning the ratings have dropped consistently by as much as 53%!

This isn’t that surprising as the series as a whole so far has been… well… pretty dull for the most part. With the huge worldwide success of The Avengers, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. feels as though it was rushed into production. It almost certainly would have benefitted from a longer gestation period, giving the writers time to develop more exciting stories and provide the show with a definite identity all its own. That being said, ABC is probably hoping to squeeze another season out of the show so that it can lead into the S.H.I.E.L.D. heavy Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014 and Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015. Whedon co-created S.H.I.E.L.D., and wrote & directed the pilot so it would make sense that he would want to tie the show into the film somehow.

For now ABC is certain to meet its 22-episode commitment but if the show’s audience continues to dwindle, a renewal is another story.
