The internet has been awash with rumours in recent days that classic ‘90s series Twin Peaks could be on the verge of a comeback.

The series, which was a phenomenon when first broadcast, and remains one of the most acclaimed television series ever, focused on life in a small town in the American Northwest, and the murder of local high school student Laura Palmer.

2014 marks an important date in Twin Peaks lore. In an early episode of the 1989 set series, lead character F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) had a dream (the famous Red Room sequence, where we first see the Black Lodge) revealing key clues regarding the murder. The scene was captioned onscreen as occurring ’25 years later’.

This has led to a cycle of rumours in recent days that the series might be on the verge of a comeback next year. Details of a meeting creator David Lynch has supposedly had with executives at network NBC about reviving the series have appeared online. Key cast members have also been rumoured to have been contacted regarding reprising their roles.

Now those rumours would appear to have been dashed by co-creator Mark Frost, who Tweeted on Wednesday:

“Dear Internet: You are very good at spreading rumors. Truth is more valuable and much harder to come by. Sincerely yours, @mfrost11”

Whilst not fully ruling out a return of the series at some point, or anything to mark the forthcoming 25th anniversary, Frost’s statement does appear to put paid to the current spate of rumours.
