Even though the latest season of American Horror Story has not long finished, the first details of the upcoming fourth season have been released, which will be subtitled Freak Show and likely endure tedious and unfounded declarations of it being a low-rent rip-off of Carnivàle.

Set in the coastal village of Jupiter, Florida in 1950 (thereby cementing AHS’s modern day/period alternation) it will star Jessica Lange as a German expat who is struggling to operate one of the US’s last remaining freak shows (and given the ladling of trash we’ve come to expect, she’s probably also an ex-Nazi spy or something).

Her “unusuals” (spend a moment imagining Lange pronouncing that word in an over the top German accent) will be played by others in AHS’s repertory company – Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Frances Conroy – as well as returning Coven newcomers Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett.

Denis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are currently in talks for other roles, and it’s probably not too presumptuous to guess that Lily Rabe and Taissa Farmiga will be joining them. Also, while nothing’s been mentioned either way, another appearance from Zachary Quinto would certainly not be unwelcome.
