Back in 2011, the cancellation of DOCTOR WHO’s behind-the-scenes sister show DOCTOR WHO CONFIDENTIAL was a big loss for the brand. Whether watched as a way of learning more about the show, put on in the background as friends debated the Doctor’s new adventure, or inspiring young people to work in TV, CONFIDENTIAL was a fine accompaniment to the BBC’s flagship time-travel drama.

And so it’s very exciting news that the BBC have today announced DOCTOR WHO EXTRA, which is basically CONFIDENTIAL regenerated, and will accompany each episode of the upcoming series 8, which begins this Saturday. Admittedly, they’re only ten minutes each, but it seems they’ll pack a lot into the shortened running time.

The press release promises “unparalled access” to stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, lead writer Steven Moffat, and guest stars including Ben Miller and Michelle Gomez, also stating that “casual viewers will enjoy the fun, fast pace and lighter side of Doctor Who Extra but there’s plenty for fans, too, as we take a quick dip into the archive for every edition, reflecting on how Doctor Who’s history is echoed in this current series.”

DOCTOR WHO series 8 begins this Saturday at 19:50 on BBC One, and look out on the iPlayer or the Red Button for the first instalment of DOCTOR WHO EXTRA soon afterwards.
