Another day, another news story from the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, now filming in South Wales before moving to London later in the month. Following this weekend’s announcement confirming the involvement of tenth Doctor David Tennant and Billie Piper as his companion Rose Tyler alongside current Doctor/companion team Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman and publicity photographs of the two Doctors together at the weekend read-through and a later image of the two joined by Coleman and guest star Joanna (Gavin and Stacey) Page, a new publicity photo, just released from the BBC, confirms the return of another fan-favourite alien from the classic series. The Anniversary Special will see the return of the Zygons, first (and last) seen in the 1975 Tom Baker adventure ‘Terror Of The Zygons’ (due out on DVD later this year). Long considered one of the more successful monster costume designs from the old series, it’s interesting to see that Neill Gorton, who designs the prosthetics for the new series, has remained wonderfully true to the spirit of the original, perhaps even more than he did with this year’s other (so far) returning aliens The Ice Warriors. During his time in the series David Tennant often expressed a desire to see the Zygons return to the show and viewers might remember a reference made to the creatures during last years ‘Power of Three’ episode.

The 3D DOCTOR WHO 50th Anniversary Special is expected to screen on November 23rd 2013.
