Unsurprisingly, the betting book on who will be the twelfth Doctor following the news of Matt Smith’s departure. And let’s face it, speculating on who will take over the TARDIS is half the fun/the coping mechanism when an actor announces he is leaving. So let’s take a look at some of the bookies favourites (for what that’s worth).

As always there are your usual ridiculous names (Simon Cowell, Tom Cruise etc) and previous cast members (David Tennant, Billie Piper and – more plausibly at least – David Morrisey and Russell Tovey) whose names have been put on the betting slips along with the potentially more likely Ben Whishaw (Skyfall), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Serentity), Damien Molony (Being Human) and Alexander Vlahos (Merlin).

Perhaps most surpising is the current favourite with Skybet (5/2 favourite in fact), which is none other Law & Order UK’s Ben Daniels. He’s not a name that instantly springs to mind, but once it’s been put out there, you can kind of see it working. Although if they’re going to go older this time, I’d still like to see Daniel’s State Within co-star and one time Lucius Malfoy; Jason Isaacs take over the role.

Whoever gets the part, we’ll probably find out ahead of Matt Smiths departure this Christmas (although personally I like the idea of it remaining a surprise for once).
