Sony Pictures is in final negotiations for the rights to a live action adaptation of eco-aware 1990s animated series CAPTAIN PLANET AND THE PLANETEERS, say The Hollywood Reporter

For those not in the know, CAPTAIN PLANET AND THE PLANETEERS followed a group of teenagers, one each from North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, and South America, as they fought to protect the planet from the evil forces of pollution. Faced with such villains as Verminous Skumm, Dr. Blight, and Duke Nukem (no, he’s not related to the video game character), the Planeteers had to call in the super-powered Captain Planet.

With an international cast, an ecological message, and potential for lots of things to blow up, CAPTAIN PLANET may fit right into the current trend for big-budget superhero bonanzas, even if it’s unlikely to be as dark in tone as the likes of THE DARK KNIGHT.

However, Christopher Nolan isn’t yet signed on to direct (we can hope…) and Captain P isn’t the most well-known of superheroes, so it’s unknown whether the project will be able to attract any big stars to the role. That said, Don Cheadle has given it a go before.
