While we’re all excited for the return of Rose Tyler in the DOCTOR WHO fiftieth anniversary special, actress Billie Piper is moving on to creepier territory. She’s been cast in PENNY DREADFUL, a psychosexual horror series following frightening and iconic literary characters as they struggle with alienation in Victorian London – Frankenstein’s monster having family issues with Dr. F, Dracula dealing with the usual oppression placed on immigrants, Dorian Gray popping round for tea, that kind of thing. Piper’s character will arrive in this world from Ireland, on the run from a dark past.
The series, a co-production between Showtime and Sky Atlantic, is the creation of SKYFALL writer John Logan, with his buddy Sam Mendes helping out behind the scenes. Starring alongside Piper will be Josh Hartnett, Eva Green, Timothy Dalton, Rory Kinnear, Harry Treadaway and Reeve Carney.
Shooting begins in October, so we're likely to see the series sometime next year. With a cast this strong and a fascinating concept, there's no reason the reviews shouldn't be more Penny Awesome than Penny Dreadful.
