Appearing at Tribeca Film Festival to promote his second directorial effort, TRUST ME, Clark Gregg, aka Marvel’s Agent Phil Coulson, spoke to Screen Rant about ABC’s upcoming Marvel TV show, AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. Last seen dead at the hands of Loki in THE AVENGERS, the reappearance of Agent Coulson is certainly a delicate matter.

Discussing the character’s supposed return from the dead, Gregg said, “I don’t know how you could not change going through what he went through. I think if he hadn’t gone through some kind of change, it wouldn’t be any good. That said, I don’t know if he understands how much he’s changed.”

Whilst no details are yet known on how Coulson is now alive and well, Gregg explained, “When Joss described to me the mystery and the complexity and the unanswered questions about Phil Coulson standing there trying to deal with this, I found it so fascinating and so true to the world of the comics and mythology in general as I understand them that I was immediately in.”

The death of the Coulson character was seen as an inspirational tool in Whedon’s superhero team-up film, so the resurrection, or lack of demise, for that matter, of Gregg’s character would be seemingly keeping certain heroes in the dark. “Some level of deception must have been perpetrated on the Avengers. It must have been, I think,” added Gregg.

Constant rumours suggest that Gregg’s Coulson will actually go on to become the Vision at some point down the line, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. will be airing in pilot form later this year.
