Having already brought in several new faces ahead of its third season, The Flash has now added another villainous DC speedster to its ranks.

TVLine is reporting that The Vampire Diaries’ Todd Lasance has been cast as Edward Clariss, aka The Rival, a comic book villain tied to Jay Garrick. Given how Season 2 of the show saw Zoom hunting down and killing any and all speedsters, speculation is that The Rival may well have gone in to hiding previously. In the comic book realm, The Rival believed he had recreated the exact formula that gave Garrick his superspeed. Upon being shunned by the science community, Clariss donned a darker version of Garrick’s outfit and started a life of criminal shenanigans.

This new addition is just the latest villain to be confirmed for Season 3 of The Flash, with Mirror Master, The Top, Magenta, Doctor Alchemy, and nefarious speedster Savitar all previously revealed to be a part of the upcoming season. Added to that, Reverse-Flash will also be a presence throughout at least the first half of the new season.

The official synopsis for The Flash’s third season reads:

Blinded by anger, Barry unwittingly plays into Zoom’s game and uncovers the evil speedster’s true goal: to destroy all Earths in the multiverse. In the race of his life, Barry ultimately gets the upper hand against Zoom and defeats his nemesis. But unable to celebrate victory, Barry makes a world-shaking decision and speeds back in time to the night his mother died to stop Reverse-Flash from killing her, irrevocably changing his past and redetermining his future.

The Flash returns on October 4th.
