The title for the first STAR WARS spin-off movie is out of the bag! During the recent Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Bob Iger revealed that the film will be called ROGUE ONE, will be penned by Chris Weitz, and will star Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones. As already known, Gareth Edwards will be directing.

Additionally, Iger dropped the news that the film will start shooting in London this summer ahead of its December 16th, 2016 release. The concept for the story initially came from John Knoll, the chief creative officer at ILM and an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor himself. Knoll will also serve as an executive producer along with Simon Emanuel and Jason McGatlin, with Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To to produce and John Swartz to co-produce. Exact plot details are unknown at this stage, although this will be the first of three spin-off movies that will be sandwiched between the upcoming releases of EPISODE VII, EPISODE VIII and EPISODE IX.

Iger went on to confirm that Rian Jonson will be writing and directing STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII, with the release date for that film revealed to be May 26th, 2017, which is 40 years and a day from the actual release date of the first film in the franchise way back in 1977.

Before all of this, J.J. Abrams’ STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS hits screens on December 18th.
