In what could prove to be an inspired choice, Tilda Swinton is in negotiations to play The Ancient One in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange.

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the actress is in talks for the role, which would see some gender-swapping for the character. The Ancient One is generally always portrayed as a male character, and he is one who served as a mentor for Doctor Strange on his ascension to becoming the Sorcerer Supreme. Even after death, The Ancient One was still able to be summoned to assist and advise Strange when needed. It’s believed that Marvel Studios was initially looking for a male actor for the role but ended up adjusting the character to make he into a she.

As for Swinton, she’s no stranger to comic book adaptations, having appeared in Constantine and Snowpiercer, and she’ll also be familiar to genre fans for The Chronicles of Narnia movie series, as well as having appeared in a whole host of films over the years, such as Moonrise Kingdom, Adaptation, The Grand Budapest Hotel, We Need to Talk About Kevin, Burn After Reading, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Vanilla Sky.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange is currently set for a November 4th, 2016 release.
