In a twist worthy of a horror classic itself, it’s been revealed that upcoming effort The Woods is actually a sequel to The Black Witch Project.

Bloody Disgusting has confirmation of the news – news that they actually initially reported on over a year ago – and the title of The Woods has been replaced by simply Blair Witch. The Woods was set for a US and UK cinema release on September 16th, which is still the case but just under a new title.

You’re Next’s Adam Wingard has helmed Blair Witch, with Simon Barrett having penned the screenplay. Starring James Allen McCune, Callie Hernandez, Brandon Scott, Valorie Curry, Corbin Reid and Wes Robinson, early buzz around the film has it pegged as one of the scariest efforts of recent years.

The official blurb on Blair Witch reads as below:

A group of college students venture into the Black Hills Forest in Maryland to uncover the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of James’ sister who many believe is connected to the legend of the Blair Witch. At first the group is hopeful, especially when a pair of locals offer to act as guides through the dark and winding woods, but as the endless night wears on, the group is visited by a menacing presence. Slowly, they begin to realise the legend is all too real and more sinister than they could have imagined.

Now that the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, the below trailer has also been released:
