If you sat down and tried to count up how many varying big screen incarnations of bloodsuckers we’ve seen over the years, you’d likely make yourself dizzy. Well, now you can add another Nosferatu movie to that list.

Not only is there a remake of F.W. Murnau’s iconic Nosferatu in development, now comes confirmation that The Witch’s Robert Eggers will be the one tasked with bringing this old favourite back to life. Speculation earlier in the year had Eggers pinned as the man to oversee this redo, and now the writer/director has confirmed this to be true.

Speaking to Indiewire, Eggers honestly admitted, “ to me. It feels ugly and blasphemous and egomaniacal and disgusting for filmmaker in my place to do Nosferatu next. I was really planning on waiting a while, but that’s how fate shook out.”

On what makes this project so special to him, Eggers enthused, “Nosferatu has a very close, magical connection for me. Though if I were to make the movie 17-year-old Rob was going to make of Nosferatu it would have been something between like The Nightmare Before Christmas and Sin City, whereas this is going to be the same approach as The Witch, where 1830s Biedermeier Baltic Germany needs to be approached in a way that seems real.”

Whilst Murnau’s 1922 movie is revered as an all-time classic by many, so too is Werner Herzog’s mesmerising 1979 Nosferatu the Vampyre. As such, Eggers certainly has a lot to live up to. If The Witch is anything to go by, though, this is certainly a talented fella, and so here’s hoping he can do something special with this upcoming redo.

Expect more on this as it develops.
