Eisner winning comic book The Wicked + The Divine is to be turned into a TV series.

The Image comic, created by British creative powerhouses Jamie McKelvie, Kieron Gillen and Matt Wilson, is the tale of young people who claim to be ancient gods returned to Earth, with all the power that implies.

Universal Television has optioned the rights to the property and it will be produced by the company Milkfed Criminal Masterminds, which is ran by Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick, who are also well known for their own ground-breaking work in comic books, namely Sex Criminals and Bitch Planet.

The Wicked + The Divine has quickly gained its own following as a firm fan favourite, and it’s characters are frequently cosplayed at conventions. STARBURST gave the first graphic novel collection, THE FAUST ACT, 9 out 10 stars (we knocked off a star for the terrible pun.)

Jamie McKelvie and Kieron Gillen are best known for their work on Phonogram, a comic book in which magic and music are intertwined in cool and unusual ways. Wilson is also highly regarded for his work on DC’s Wonder Woman, whilst McKelvie’s credits include redesigning costumes for character such as Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel and producing works such as The Secret Avengers. Gillen’s recent work includes Uber, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Iron Man.

We can’t wait to see who they’ll cast as the main characters, and we’re particularly intrigued to see who gets to play the characters of Lucifer, Baal, Dionysus, Cassandra and Laura.
