After that news that Marvel and Sony’s new Spidey movie will officially be titled Spider-Man Homecoming, now comes an interesting story on who could be the villain of the piece.

Birth.Movies.Death. is reporting that The Vulture is definitely in the film, although it’s not clear yet whether he’ll serve as a side villain for Tom Holland’s Wallcrawler or whether he’ll be the main course for this new Spidey to deal with.

The Vulture, also known simply as Adrian Toomes, is one of Webhead’s longest-serving rogues, having debuted way back in 1963’s Amazing Spider-Man #2. An impressive electrical engineer, the elderly Toomes designed himself a harness that gives him both enhanced strength and the ability to fly. As such, a big screen outing for the villain could lead to some great high-flying visual as he does skyward battle with Spider-Man. Additionally, others such as Blackie Drago and Jimmy Natale have also taken on the Vulture mantle at various points in comic book history.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that The Vulture has been mooted for a cinematic appearance, with Sam Raimi keen to include him in Spider-Man 3. At that point in time, Ben Kingsley was in the frame to play Toomes. Ultimately, Spider-Man 3 was a movie that Raimi saw taken out of his hands, with Venom and Sandman decided upon by Sony as the villains of that effort. The director, though, still had thoughts of using Vulture for Spider-Man 4. Unfortunately for Raimi, there’d be no Spider-Man 4, with Sony instead deciding to eventually reboot the franchise with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man. Even then, The Vulture was one of the rogues teased during all of the setup moments of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with his harness and wings even glimpsed. By that point in time, all fingers seemed to be pointing at John Malkovich as the favourite to play Adrian Toomes, only The Amazing Spider-Man franchise soon fell apart when the second outing spent too much time doing said setup work, as a result losing focus on itself and thus doomed for failure. And now, here we are we with another actor, Tom Holland, donning the famed red and blue as we get another big screen Spidey.

It goes without saying that this is all far from confirmed at this stage, but would you been keen to see The Vulture take flight when Jon Watts’ Spider-Man Homecoming arrives on July 7th, 2017?
