After plenty of rumours, it’s now been revealed that, yes, the Russo brothers will indeed be directing Marvel Studios’ two-part AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.
Badass Digest initially broke the news, and the pair of Anthony and Joe Russo will be replacing the ever-popular Joss Whedon on the central AVENGERS franchise. The Russos, of course, directed the stunning CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER and are about to start shooting CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. They’re also known for the excellent COMMUNITY, not to mention being recently linked to the upcoming Channing Tatum-starring GHOSTBUSTERS movie.
Having spoken to the Russos last year, not to mention being absolutely flawed by the fantastic WINTER SOLDIER, we’re fully on board with this one. Yes, it’ll be a mighty hard task to fill the Joss Whedon void, but in the Russos we trust.
Plot-wise, INFINITY WAR will be the culmination of the Thanos thread that was teased at the very end of Whedon’s AVENGERS ASSEMBLE, with the Mad Titan finally butting heads with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR is released on May 6th, 2016, with AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 1 currently set for May 4th, 2018 and AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 2 to follow on May 3rd, 2019.
Expect to be hearing something official on all of this from Marvel Studios/Disney shortly.
