In terms of turning over a profit, THE PURGE franchise has done quite well out of its two movies to date. Last year’s THE PURGE took home $89 million from a budget of $3 million, whilst this year’s THE PURGE: ANARCHY took $108 million from a $9 million budget. As a result, now comes word that a third film in the series is already in development.

Deadline reports that Universal Pictures, Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes are collectively moving forward with a third film, with James DeMonaco currently attached to write and direct the movie. DeMonaco wrote and directed both of the previous entries in the franchise.

On the news, DeMonaco said, “I never imagined that THE PURGE would become the phenomenon it has become. And I am thrilled to continue my collaboration with Blumhouse, Sebastien Lemercier, Platinum Dunes and the great team at Universal in building THE PURGE into a worldwide franchise.”

The series focuses on a world where murder is legal for one night of the year, with such a premise has catching the attention of fans of the horror genre over the last two years. And in fairness to this third film, it certainly feels like the series has a concept that could still offer a lot more to fans.

Expect more on this as it develops.
