Antlers filmmaker Scott Cooper’s The Pale Blue Eye, which stars Christian Bale and Harry Melling, will soon be coming to Netflix. Ahead of its release in late December, the streamer have released the first teaser trailer for the Gothic thriller.

Bale portrays retired detective Augustus Landor, tasked with investigating a series of murders. Also key to the film is Melling as famed poet Edgar Allan Poe.

The film, written and directed by Cooper, is based on Louis Bayard’s 2006 novel of the same name that centres on a young cadet the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe (Melling) and a series of murders that took place at the United States Military Academy, West Point.

Per the synopsis, The Pale Blue Eye is in 1830. In the early hours of a grey winter morning, a cadet is found dead. But after the body arrives at the morgue, tragedy becomes savagery when it’s discovered that the young man’s heart has been skilfully removed. Fearing irreparable damage to the fledgling military academy, its leaders turn to a local detective, Augustus Landor (Bale), to solve the murder. Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, Landor enlists the help of one of their own to pursue the case, an eccentric cadet with a disdain for the rigors of the military and a penchant for poetry – a young man named Edgar Allan Poe (Melling).

The Pale Blue Eye assembles a truly impressive cast: Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Harry Lawtey, Simon McBurney, Timothy Spall, Hadley Robinson, Joey Brooks, Brennan Cook, Gideon Glick, Fred Hechinger, Matt Helm, Steven Maier, Charlie Tahan, and Robert Duvall also star.

The Pale Blue Eye releases in cinemas December 23rd, 2022, and on Netflix from January 6th, 2023. Watch the trailer below:
