In less than two years time Universal Pictures will rebirth THE MUMMY franchise, only this time without the Scottish nightmare that is John Hannah on the casting sheet. June 24th, 2016 is the release date that has been set and hopefully some production details will unravel in the next few months.

Writer/director Stephen Sommers’ franchise was ironically reminiscent of a scarab beetle; it tore through your flesh and left fucking Brendan Fraser to live there, lighting your wounds with a seemingly endless flaming torch and bathing in them for three whole films. You could say that this was down to Sommers’ poor execution of a really interesting opportunity (he didn’t learn from his mistakes, take into account the existence of THE SCORPION KING and VAN HELSING). However, Universal has employed writer/producer/director Alex Kurtzman to take the project forward and hopefully redeem their beloved product.

Plot details and such are currently hidden in the company’s vast tomb, but unfortunately it appears as though fans will not receive a horror film; word on the grapevine suggests the intended style will be action/adventure-based once again. The company is also busy in the arrangement of THE WOLFMAN, FRANKENSTEIN and DRACULA reboots, with an eye to build a Marvel Studios-style shared world for their Universal Monsters to inhabit.
