As expected, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is a huge success across the globe and, as such, has been smashing records since its release this past Thursday.

As of this weekend, The Force Awakens had taken $238 million in the United States, which beat the record of $208 million that was set earlier this year by Jurassic World. In terms of elsewhere, the international opening weekend, which includes figures for the likes of the UK, Australia, Germany and Russia, took another $279 million. That international figure is the third-highest opening weekend ever behind Jurassic World’s $316 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s $314 million, although Jurassic World has an edge as that figure included China… a market that doesn’t get The Force Awakens until January.

Another record that this latest Star Wars movie has nabbed is the biggest US December opening in cinema history, easily beating Avatar’s record of $164 million. In the US, the film also became the highest Thursday preview ever, with a $57 million gross, and even took the highest single day and Friday gross ever, clocking in at $120 million, marking it as the first film to take over $100 million in one day.

In total, as of this weekend, The Force Awakens has pulled in an amazing $516 million, making it the second-highest global weekend opening ever, behind only Jurassic World’s $525 million, which, again, including the Chinese market that doesn’t get Episode VII until next year.

These are all massively impressive figures, and Disney Chairman Alan Horn commented, “Our sole focus has been creating a film that delivers that one-of-a-kind Star Wars experience, and director J.J. Abrams, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, and the Lucasfilm team have outdone themselves. To all of the fans around the world who not only came out in Force to make this such an exciting and astronomical debut but who treated this film as their own and helped preserve the experience for their fellow fans by not spoiling it – that you, we do.”

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is now in cinemas worldwide, with a China release set for January 9th. Be sure to check out our review of this latest trip to a galaxy far, far away here.
