When it was announced that FOX was developing a television series based around (and similarly titled) The Exorcist, we have to be honest and say we weren’t all that hopeful. After all, this came in the aftermath of A&E’s stinkathon Damien (itself based around The Omen). But when The Exorcist arrived, we were soon eating humble pie as the show was genuinely engaging, chilling horror TV. And so, we’re happy to report that FOX has now confirmed The Exorcist for a second season.

Of course, for those who watched the first season, we’re sure you’ll agree that the debut year did tend to struggle a little as it progressed. The early going was encouraging and sinister in all the right ways, and the middle of the season saw that huge twist revealed. While said twist (which we won’t spoil here) was one of the biggest televisual jaw-droppers we can remember, it did mean that the rest of the season was always going to struggle to top that moment. Still, The Exorcist proved to be a good addition to the world of small-screen horror, proving far better than Damien and MTV’s Scream: The TV Series yet not quite as good as the likes of Bates Motel and Hannibal.

No real details are known on what the story arc of The Exorcist’s second season will focus on, although creator Jeremy Slater previously told Bloody Disgusting, “A potential Season 2 would find Marcus, Tomas and Bennett tasked with helping a new family or a new case of possession.”

Until this news, the relative radio silence on the renewal of The Exorcist saw fans of the show fearing the worst. Fear not, though, for this encouraging and genuinely creepy series will be back later this year for a second season.

As ever, expect more on all of this as we get it.
