Despite at one time being in development over at FOX, The CW has officially nabbed the pilot for the Archie-inspired series Riverdale.

An hour-long episodic drama, Riverdale is due to start filming this spring and has Archie Comics CCO Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa on writing duties. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter and Jon Goldwater will executive produce with Aguirre-Sacasa. If all goes well with the pilot, obviously the plan is for a full season order to then be put in place.

The show will focus on Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge et al and the strangeness bubbling underneath Riverdale’s ever-cheery façade. Of course, long-time Archie rival Reggie Mantle will be present, not to mention Jughead Jones. From what we’re hearing at this stage, ever-popular gay character Kevin Keller is also believed to have a pivotal role to play in the series, and we’ll also see plenty of Archie alumni to appear, including Josie and the Pussycats.

As ever, expect more on Riverdale as it develops.
