We can safely say that this year’s THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 didn’t go down too well with us here at Starburst HQ (don’t even get the Ed started on it). A huge disappointment to us long-time Spidey fans, it seems that the film’s lacklustre reviews have led to somewhat of an uncertain future for the franchise.

Initially, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were penning the script for THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, which would then be followed the VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX spin-offs and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4. With Orci now working on STAR TREK 3, not to mention Kurtzman seemingly focussing all of his effort on VENOM, the third AMAZING SPIDER-MAN movie seems on the backburner. In fact, Orci recently gave his thoughts on the matter to IGN.

He said, “I don’t know what their plans are for that franchise. I don’t ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I’ve read probably as much as anyone else. There’s a love for THE SINISTER SIX, the idea of VENOM – there’s an idea of Spider-Man’s going to be one of these characters that’s part of our business. He’s such a popular character. Spider-Man’s not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined.”

So whilst it appears work is underway on VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX, the status of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 seems a little up in the air right now. Whilst there’s nothing to say that it won’t be happening, it could very well be that the two ASM spin-offs make it to the big screen before THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3.

In the meantime, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 hits Blu-ray and DVD on 19th August.
