The empire-building board game Terra Mystica is set for a screen adaptation by Cobalt Knight, the production company that secured the screen adaptation rights for the entire Terra Mystica universe, including the sequel Gaia Project.
The Terra Mystica strategy board game is set in a land with 14 different peoples in seven landscapes. As each group develops and grows, it has to terraform, or absorb, neighbouring lands and build towns for dominance in competition with other groups.
It’s unknown whether this adaptation will be as a series or feature film.
Last year, Cobalt Knight in a separate deal secured the screen adaptation rights to a similar strategy board game, Terraforming Mars. Making board game franchises into films or TV series appears to be a popular move at the moment, with Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons hitting cinemas this week, and Lionsgate developing a film based on Monopoly.
“We feel honoured to be trusted with these beloved games, and we are excited to expand our efforts with the support of Rain [Management Group]. We will continue to work with the designers to ensure we remain faithful stewards of their vision throughout the process of adapting their worlds to the screen,” said Cobalt Knight co-founder Christopher Kaminski said in a statement.
