Rocketman and Kingsman franchise star Taron Egerton is hoping to take on the iconic X-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The actor spoke with the New York Times to promote his Apple TV+ series Black Bird – which debuts on July 8th and sees him go against type by portraying an imprisoned drug dealer – and mentioned that he has met with Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and other top executives to discuss playing Wolverine in the MCU.

“I don’t think it would be wrong to say that,” Egerton stated. “I’d be excited but I’d be apprehensive as well, because Hugh [Jackman] is so associated with the role that I’d wonder if it’d be very difficult for someone else to do it… But hopefully, if it does come around, they’ll give me a shot.”

Hugh Jackman portrayed Logan/Wolverine in the X-Men cinematic universe almost a dozen times in official appearances, cameos, and archival footage. He last portrayed the adamantium-clawed hero in 2017’s phenomenal Logan. Jackman and Taron Egerton previously co-starred in 2016’s Eddie the Eagle.

No word whatsoever on when or how Wolverine might be brought into the cinematic world of Marvel, but Phase Four’s emphasis on the multiverse might provide an in for the studio to welcome the X-Men into the fold. After all, Deadpool 3 will officially be part of the MCU, so it’s not a far leap to assume the mutant group might also get their official introduction then.
