Creed, the next installment in the Rocky franchise, is set to arrive in UK cinemas next week, and Sylvester Stallone has been talking to Variety about what’s he got planned for the film’s sequel.

For those not familiar with Creed, it’s the story of Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Johnson, the son of Rocky’s deceased best friend, Apollo Creed. Determined to carve his own legacy as a fighter, Adonis turns to the iconic Balboa to help train him. A triumphant return for a beloved franchise, Creed has already won mass praise from critics across the globe, and as such a sequel is on the table. It goes without saying, but there’s some potential spoilers ahead when it comes to Creed.

First up, director Ryan Coogler has become a hot commodity in Hollywood, and this has been highlighted by him being currently in talks to helm Marvel Studios’ Black Panther. On the possibility of Coogler returning for Creed 2, Stallone said, “I know Ryan is probably going to be gone for a couple years. So there will be a quandary on: do we work with another director and have Ryan produce, or do we wait? There’s a diminishing time acceptance of a sequel. Now they are cranking them out in a year.”

Despite Coogler possibly not being able to direct the sequel, Sly has revealed that the pair of them have already discussed story ideas for the Creed follow-up, one of which involves bringing back Carl Weathers’ Apollo Creed and taking place in the past. Apollo, of course, died during the opening moments of Rocky IV, beaten to death in the ring by the nefarious Ivan Drago. Stallone teased, “Ryan has some ideas of going forward and backward and actually seeing Rocky and Apollo together. Think of The Godfather 2. That’s what he was thinking of, which was kind of ambitious.” Additionally, Sly confirmed that he’d recently bumped into Weathers and that he looked to be in great shape. Any past-set elements of a Creed sequel would obviously use modern technology to de-age Stallone and Weathers.

The other option is to fully continue forward with the story of Adonis Johnson/Creed, with Stallone suggesting, “You’ll have him face a different opponent, which I would say is a more ferocious, big Russian. You can start to meld my experiences and then you start to bring different cultures into it. And you can see what’s happening with the Russians today in America. The complication will come with the girl’s ambition, because she’s not Adrian. She has places to go, things to see, the clock is running on her hearing.”

Creed has currently grossed $103 million over in the US, and is set for a full UK release on January 15th.
