With Supergirl heading from CBS to The CW for its second season later this year, the Melissa Benoist-starrer has added another familiar DC character to its ranks.

The Hollywood Reporter has word that The Family’s Floriana Lima has been brought on board to play Maggie Sawyer. In the comic book realm, Sawyer was introduced by John Byrne in the 1980s and headed up Metropolis’ Special Crimes Unit. She was initially mainly a Superman-based supporting character, although she would appear in other characters’ books over the years too. Notably, Maggie Sawyer was also one of the first openly gay characters to appear in mainstream comics.

In Supergirl, Sawyer will operate as a detective for the National City Police Department, with her described as someone who “takes a special interest in the cases involving aliens.”

Supergirl will debut its second season on October 10th in the US, with a UK return to follow shortly after.
