After weeks of speculation, Warner Bros and DC have announced the cast for their forthcoming take on SUICIDE SQUAD. And whilst most of the names have been rumoured for a while, it’s nice to have confirmation, as well as being able to but faces to names.

Heading up the cast are Oscar winner Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg. They’re joined by Jai Courtney as Boomerang and Cara Delevingine as Enchantress. Although yet to be confirmed, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor is also strongly rumoured to be joining the supervillain team up.

It’s the strongest cast Warner has yet announced for their numerous in-development DC projects. Although Will Smith’s the biggest name in the cast, most eyes will doubtless be on former Bane Tom Hardy and Leto. The actor, who deservedly won an Oscar earlier this year for DALLAS BUYER’S CLUB has his work cut out for him after the late Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the character (not of course forgetting Nicholson and Cesar Romero before him, as well as a certain Jedi Knight who’s been known to memorably portray him).

Further down the cast list, Margot Robbie was superb in THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, and model turned actress Delevingine has a raft of upcoming projects, including the Hugh Jackman-starring PAN. And Jai Courtney’s along as well, which’ll be nice for him. OK, we’ll still not forgiven him for the last DIE HARD, but you can see him as Kyle Reese in TERMINATOR GENISYS next year if you’re so inclined.

On this news, Warners Brothers’ Greg Silverman said, “The Warner Brothers roots are deep on this one. David Ayer returns to the studio where he wrote TRAINING DAY and brings his incredible ability to craft multidimensional villains to this iconic DC property with a cast of long-time Warner collaborators Will Smith and Tom Hardy, and other new and returning favourites: Margot, Jared, Jai and Cara. We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

For those unfamiliar with the Suicide Squad, the group originally debuted way back in 1959. They’re essentially a group of villains who have to carry out sensitive missions for the US government. Often with some form of bomb device attached to them or put in them, if the villains don’t comply then they go kaput.

Directed by David Ayer (FURY, END OF WATCH), SUICIDE SQUAD is due to be released on August 5th, 2016.

So what do you think? Are Warner/DC finally getting their shit together? We’re (cautiously) encouraged.  Let us know in the comments below.
